This is a great hiking trail suitable for all experience levels. While it does feature some uphill elevation gain, it’s nothing too strenuous. The area and trails have been affected by wildfires, and remnants of this can be seen along the 2.5-mile round-trip hike. The journey to Wesser Bald Fire Tower is just as rewarding as the destination—you’ll love the scenic drive through the Upper Nantahala River area into the middle of nowhere. Once at the top, stunning panoramic views await, and for those not comfortable with heights, there’s a beautiful viewing spot below the toweras well.
The Wesser Bald Fire Tower sits in Nantahala National Forest, near Bryson City and Franklin, North Carolina. It is easily accessible from the Appalachian Trail (AT) and offers some of the best views in the region.
From Franklin, NC: Take US-64 W and NC-28 N for about 25 miles.
From Bryson City, NC: Take US-19 S to Wesser Creek Road for approximately 15 miles.
Trailhead Parking: Located at the Wesser Bald Trailhead, accessible by a gravel forest service road.
Originally built in the 1930s, the Wesser Bald Fire Tower was used to spot wildfires in the Nantahala National Forest. It was an essential tool in fire prevention and forest management for decades. In 1979, the upper portion of the tower was removed, leaving only the metal framework. Today, the structure remains a popular destination for hikers, providing incredible 360-degree views of the Smoky Mountains, the Blue Ridge Mountains, and the Little Tennessee River Valley.
